Things To Do As a Snow Bird In Gulf Shores, Alabama
The beaches, hiking, biking, and relaxing are calling
My husband and I are beginning to be serious about where we spend our winters when he retires. My job is something I love and I can write from anywhere. We love spending time along the Alabama Gulf Coast.
Last winter we gave a two week stay a try and we loved it- no surprise there!
We met many people who were looking for things to do. If you are like these people and not sure if you would enjoy your winter in Gulf Shores, here are some things that we recommend to do. This is a “small” glimpse into the things to see and do. You can find several more things to do here.
Spend Time On The Beach
I truly believe that the best beaches in the United States are along the 32 miles of shoreline in Alabama. The sand is like fine sugar, making it easy to walk in. We love walking along the beach.
Many people enjoy sitting in chairs while taking in the beautiful views. Others enjoy fishing, as well as sunbathing and reading a good book.
Bike The Trails In Gulf State Park
We love riding our ebikes on the biking trails in Gulf State Park. In fact, we rode them every day while we were in Gulf Shores last winter. If you don’t bring your bicycle with you, you can rent bikes at local bike shops in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail makes up many miles of the trail system.
Explore Fort Morgan
The Fort Morgan Historic Site is most known for its role in the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay.
If you are able, climb the many stairs around the site. The views are spectacular from some of the areas the stairs lead to.
I would plan a minimum of one hour to visit this historic site. Bald eagles are common in the area, as are many other birds. Be sure to have a pair of binoculars with you on your visit.
Birding Along The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail
With several nature areas to explore, birding is popular everywhere you go in Gulf Shores. Hike any of the numerous trails in the area, with binoculars in tow, and you will have yourself a winning birding experience.
Visit Bellingrath Gardens
Bellingrath gardens sits on Dauphin Island, a short car ferry ride, from Fort Morgan, Alabama.
This incredible 900 acre complex of gorgeous gardens includes a bird sanctuary with an observation tower.
February at Bellingrath Gardens- Worth a Visit!
My advice- visit this several times while you are in the area. Bellingrath Gardens changes with the seasons. And, if you happen to visit when Bellingrath Gardens is all lit up for Christmas, you will have a BONUS visit.
The Food Scene
There are many magnificent choices of food along the Alabama Coastline. If you are a snowbird, I would suggest visiting one of the local grocery stores on your first day. Plan on preparing some of your meals and dine out occasionally.
BBQ, steaks, oysters, clams, hamburgers, and so much more can be found in this area. Many restaurants have award-winning chefs on site preparing meals and serving up deliciousness.
Tip: Order the pimento cheese at CoastAL in Orange Beach.
Visit The Zoo
The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo was recently rebuilt and it’s fabulous. I love strolling through this zoo and experiencing the “little” things. The “little” things include being able to be up close to the farm animals and holding a baby kangaroo. I love watching animals up close, as they are always interesting to watch.
The best tip I can give you is to arrive first thing in the morning, as the animals are active and the crowds are minimal.
R & R
There’s nothing wrong with simply sitting and watching the water in Gulf Shores. I could sit for hours watching the waves and seeing an occasional dolphin. A little R & R (Rest & Relaxation) is good for your soul and mind. Sunsets are fabulous!
I hope this gives you insight as to some of the things you can do when you decide to winter in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I can’t wait…. We will be there for two weeks in February and it will be another fabulous stay!
